‘I wish Anja didn’t die so that I could play with her in the morning before school,’ E says as she dresses a baby doll. ‘I think she would be a good age for playing now.’

On the way to school: ‘I am an older-older sister, you know Mommy, because I have a little sister and a little brother.’

After school, working on a drawing: ‘I put Anja in the middle of E and M, cuz she was born between us. She’s the middle sister in our family.’

In the bath, playing with her baby brother, pausing to study his face: ‘Mommy, do you think Anja would have had blue eyes like me or brown eyes like Moo?…I think blue like me. Cuz we’re sisters.’
